  LAVENDER
Family: LAMIACEAE
Parts Used: Dried flowers/buds or steam distilled flowers, stems & leaves
Chemical Constituents:
The Essential oil is primarily made up of Esters and Alcohols -
linalol, eucalyptol, geraniol, limonene, cineole, tannins, coumarins, flavonoids, triterpenoids.

 
    Properties:     Internal Uses:  
         Constituents of the oils found in lavender are said to treat bacteria, fungus, microbial activity on gums, and airborne molds. It is analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic anti-toxic, anti-venomous, aromatic, carminative, cholagogue, digestive tonic, diuretic, nervine, rubefacient, sedative, stomach tonic, prophylactic agent, immune stimulant, vermifuge & parasiticidal properties (able to expel intestinal worms)           Taken internally as a culinary herb (ie: tea or in a concentrate/ tincture ) it eases indigestion and flatulence. Lavender has fungicidal qualities and is a prophylactic agent (defends against disease) and an immune stimulant used as a preventative against colds, flu, etc. Also used to treat asthma, colic, cough, depression, exhaustion, fainting, headache, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, pain, stress, sunburn, vertigo, vomiting.

    Topical Uses / Skin Care:  
         Lavender has anti-septic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. Used to treat burns, cellulite, cold sores, edema, fatigue, halitosis, headache, infection, insect bites & stings, insect repellant, irritability, joint pain, lice, muscle soreness, rheumatism, scabies, scars, snakebites, toothache and yeast infections. Lavender also is an excellent deodorant and anti-seborrhoeic, as it is used to combat acne, eczema, seborrhoea and spots.  
    Topical Applications:
         A mouthwash, foot bath, douche for yeast infections. The steam distilled essential oil has been used for toothaches, cold sores. Rubbed on temples to alleviate headaches, applied to burns to promote new cell growth, prevent infections and lessen scarring. The oil or fresh plant can be rubbed directly on skin as an insect repellent to prevent mosquito bits, lice and scabies infestation. It is used topically on venomous bites such as bee stings, mosquitoes, black widow and brown recluse spiders, wasps and snakes. Natural salves, bar soaps, liquid soaps, shampoos and massage oils rich in Lavender Essential oil, without artificial or synthetic ingredients can be used for the above health benefits as well.
     Pain Relief:     Stress Relief:
         Lavender is an analgesic, muscle decontractant and anti-spasmodic agent used in conditions that involve spasms or pain such as rheumatism, arthritis, muscle aches, cramps, toothaches, earache, menstrual pains.           Aromatherapy: Lavender has a regulating effect on the nervous system. Being an extreme adaptogen, it can have a restorative effect in the cases of listlessness and weakness, but conversely has a calming effect on hyperactivity or agitation. It is one of the best stress relievers known and can also help with insomnia.
